Dubrovnik to Hvar - drive (via Split) or ferry?

My wife and I will be in Croatia for 2 weeks at end of September. Our current itinerary has us in Dubrovnik for 3 nights then our next stop is Hvar for 2 nights. Our current plan is to rent a car in Dubrovnik, make a leisurely drive to Split with some sightseeing along the way (Ston + anything else), drop car in Split in mid-afternoon and take the ferry to Hvar. The reason for this plan is to do some sightseeing between Dub/Split and also wondering about ferry weather at that time of year (we lost a couple planned days along the Italian Amalfi coast last year due to ferries not running).

Now I'm second guessing and looking for opinions on whether taking the ferry from Dub to Hvar is a better choice for any reason? It would be a bit less hassle and hopefully able to see some island views along the way, but it also excludes us from the sightseeing stops along the coastal highway between Dub and Split, and is also a bit more weather dependent.

Any thoughts or opinions welcomed. Thanks.

PS. Besides Ston, any recommended sights along the coastal highway? Thx

Let’s try it and see what happens. I am doing this on the fly, without any idea where it will end.

08:30 uber to Sitx Rental Car agency (30 min, wait and transfer) and rent a car (30 min for paperwork)
09:30 Depart for Sixt Rental in Split to return the car. (3:15 drive if direct with no stops and no traffic issues or making wrong turns and getting lost)
12:45 Earliest you will reach Split Sixt Rental. Return car (30 min) and take uber to ferry port (30 min wait and transfer).
The earliest you could be at the ferry is 13:45
You said use time till midafternoon for sightseeing along the drive. I will say that midafternoon is 15:00. So, you have 1:15 for sightseeing and eating lunch between Dubrovnik and Split.

I am not saying this is the best source for ferry schedules, but good enough to have an idea that they are frequent. Whatever time you get to the port, you can be on a ferry in 30 minutes. https://www.ferryhopper.com/booking/results?itinerary=SPA,HVA00&dates=20260917

Now, if you hired a driver, you miss the freedom of driving the road. That’s a really big plus for renting a car. If that is the driving force, then it trumps everything else and nothing else matters. Its your holiday, it doent have to be anything differnet than what you want it to be.

Sixt wants 300€ to 365€ depending on how much insurance you want to buy. With a couple of uber transfers you will be at 400€. Yikes! Croatia has gotten so freeking expensive. There are probably cheaper though. But of course, if money were the issue, you would be on that 10€ bus.

So, what does that private transfer with some stops cost? Worst case scenario is 400€ with 2 stops of an hour each; one at a winery and one at Ston (there are other options for stops and other providers - I've had a couple of different drivers in Croatia, all worked for me).

But driving yourself will be more efficient … except that the transfer driver knows the roads and with the transfer driver its door to door so no ubers to rental offices and no paperwork and no financial risk if the car is in an accident. So you could be picked up at the gate to Dubrovnik Old Town at 8:30, make the drive including THREE + hours of sightseeing and be at the ferry dock at 15:00. Maybe meet a nice Croatian chap to boot.

Oh, you asked about places other than Ston? Ask the driver, I suspect he might know some stuff thats not in the guide books. But there are some wineries and i seem to remember an interesting olive plantation.

I’m curious how much time you have planned to devote to southern Dalmatia, and what kinds of things you like to do.
I’m a sea and outdoors lover, and a September trip to me would mean islands, but not knowing the rest of your plans, it’s hard to say. If you had your heart set on Ston, you could take the bus there from Dubrovnik, then continue on to Korcula via bus/ferry at Orebic. From Korcula to Hvar there are daily sailings.

I love being out on the water, so if it were me I would take the ferry. We did a holiday a few years ago starting in Split and taking the ferry down to Dubrovnik, stopping off at Hvar, Korcula, and Mljet. It was a lovely holiday and some of my favourite times were sitting out on the ferry and watching the beautiful scenery. However, if you have specific things you want to see on land then I can see why you'd want to drive.

Regarding the weather, in the Mediterranean things start to change into October, so you should be ok. But you will need to get a ferry either way so if the ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar isn't running I'm not sure the ferry from Split would be either- tho the difference is with Split you're already much closer.

I would vote ferry. The convenience, cost, time and stress savings are worth it alone. Dubrovnik and Hvar are your headline acts and will deliver any goods the coast drive might. Five nights is a decent amount of time here, but it’s not an excess amount either. I wouldn’t minimize time in transit when possible.

I think end of September is pretty safe weather-wise, but if you are concerned I would scope out what the bus options are as a fallback.
