Dubrovnik tips for older visitors

My 82 year old husband and I will be visiting Dubrovnik on our own. He has trouble walking long distances especially if it's uphill. We have heard that the town is bowl shaped and that everything is uphill from the center. Any suggestions about how to visit comfortably, particularly where to stay for 3 or 4 nights? Thank you.

Most of the sobes (vacation apartments) are in houses up the hill. Our sobe was 435 steps from the main street (as noted in the ad for the sobe). So this may be out. There are a number of hotels with no steps from the old city. I'd look into those.
