My husband, myself and another couple (all in late 60's) have flights arriving in Dubrovnik and departing from Split with 10 days in-between. I realize our timing is out of the usual tourist period and as a result am having trouble getting information regarding ferries or transportation between Korcula and Hvar for that time of year. Hoping someone can give us some answers. Also, suggestions regarding how long we should spend in each location would be helpful. I realize we are gambling on the weather but you can't change Mother Nature. Thanking you in advance
Check out croatiaferries.com. They have a year round schedule posted.
Thank you for the information Barbara
Since both ferry schedules and amenities (restaurants and such) on the islands will be reduced in October, it might be worth considering alternatives. I'm not saying you shouldn't go to the islands if this is what you want to do, but since it is off season, you might find the logistics challenging and the rewards diminished.
An option to consider is to head to Mostar and Sarajevo. You could spend 3 nights in Dubrovnik, then rent a car and drive to Sarajevo, stay 3 nights there, then a night in Mostar, then drive to Split and drop off the car and spend the rest of the time there. And possibly you could add a day trip to Hvar from Split if the ferry schedule supports that.
I spent three weeks in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia back in 2014, including time in both Hvar and Korcula. I loved it all, but the time I spent in Sarajevo and Mostar is what I have the most powerful memories of 3 years later.
Thank you Lane, Wow - interesting information and something we hadn't even considered. I'll mention this tonight when we meet our friends for dinner.
The islands will be dead in October, with many cafes and restaurants and some hotels having closed for the winter. Stick to the mainland.
If you still want to go to the islands, look at the actual operator's website - krilo.hr. Today, the catamaran between Split, the islands and Dubrovnik isn't running due to the high winds. In October, this boat doesn't run daily as it does at present, so you would need to factor in some flexibility in case it wasn't running.
Thank you Jennifer,
We've pretty well decided to stay on the mainland given the feedback of irregular ferries and lack of restaurants/accommodations. We've also decided to "wing it" in terms of accommodations which gives us flexibility as to where and when to travel. Hopefully the weather will be nice but because we live on the west coast we're used to rain and will take it in our stride.
