Dubrovnik in the Rain? And Dubrovnik with (small) luggage?

Hi. I'm looking for ideas for what to do in Dubrovnik in the rain, especially given that I am not comfortable spending a lot of time indoors if others are not masked.

Light rain is predicted for our arrival day, and we have three hours from the time our flight lands to the time we check into our apartment, not too far from the Pile gate (but up some stairs). My thought was to find a place to have lunch once we get to old town, but I prefer to limit indoor eating. What are our options? Does anyone have suggestions for restaurants that have a covered patio?

For our second day, we have a tour booked, and rain is predicted. We'll go on the tour, but what suggestions are there for things to do or see once the tour is done? e.g. Is there a museum that you liked that isn't generally really busy?

On our last day, our ferry to Hvar doesn't leave until 4:30 pm, so our thought is to store our luggage (carryons) at the port and go to Lokrum Island. Does this sound reasonable?

I don't know how crowded it gets, but I liked the old pharmacy in the Franciscan monastery.
Hopefully it will just be a light drizzle!
Also, I believe the boats to Lokrum depart from old town (they used to--that could have changed), so you should be able to store luggage in old town and not have to go back and forth from the port for that.

Walking the walls is the best thing to do. It's about 2K around. There are several small museums along the walls (history of Dubrovnik).

The suggestion of the Pharmacy Museum is good. There is also the old palace, the Cathedral, as well as going for a drink in several of the bars. I like Buzz Bar, which is the lower-end version of the Buza Bar. The Buza bar is famous and over-looks the sea. The Buzz bar is just a place for a coffee and an afternoon discount wine. You can also do a wine-tasting.

We chose to not walk the walls and to stroll along the narrow alleys off the beaten paths. The narrow alleys provided some protection from the light rain and we enjoyed a different perspective creating wonderful memories.

Thank you for the ideas.

I'm trying to avoid removing my mask to eat or drink indoors, but I'll check for sheltered outdoor tables. The walls are a must for us. They are part of our tour on the second day. We love wandering narrow streets, and will definitely do that, but probably after we can drop off our luggage.

Good to know about the ferry to Lokrum. Somehow I had the idea that we had to go out of the Old Town for all the ferries.

Right outside the Pile Gate is the restaurant Dubravka 1839 - they have a covered patio and the food is good. You can just have coffee if you want. Also, the views are amazing. And to confirm from above, the port is in Gruz, about a 10 minute cab ride. Store your bags inside the old town on the street behind the Stradun closest to the Pile Gate. Funny, I’ve walked that street so many times over so many trips and don’t know the name. Going to go look it up now. PS - we are in Sicily, before we came they predicted rainfor our first 2 days, didn’t happen. Hasn’t rained yet, knock wood.

I agree with Barbara that even though rain is predicted, it might not rain. That has happened to us on several vacations.

Another place you can visit is War Photo Limited. We were there in 2019, and it was not crowded at all. This is a museum of the history of the Balkan Wars in the 1990's done with photographs. It is fascinating, and you learn a lot. I highly recommend it. This permanent exhibit is very powerful. They also have a temporary exhibit which I believe changes every year.

We also enjoyed the 14th century Franciscan Monastery, which was not crowded when we were there.

For covered outdoor dining, we LOVED our meal at Kopun, located at the top of the Jesuit steps. It was one of our favorite meals in Croatia!!

Thanks so much, everyone! Definitely adding these two restaurants to my list--rain or no rain, as well as the Franciscan Monastery and the Buzz Bar.

So, today was our first day, and it was wonderful. It rained before we arrived but stopped as soon as we landed. It was supposed to rain more later in the day, but it did not. In fact, I got a bit sunburned, because I hadn’t bothered with sunscreen.

We were able to check into our apartment early, so we got settled and headed to old town. We were hungry by then, so we ate at the first promising place we stumbled upon that had outdoor seating. Turns out this pace opened just 10 days ago. It’s called Restaurant Mediteraneo, and the lamb chops I had there were seriously the best I’ve ever eaten. We also ended up at Buza Barr (not Buzz Bar), although not by design. We came upon it at a point in our wandering when we were ready for a drink and a sit.

I must say, I am already in love with Dubrovnik.

BB, be sure to walk the wall, I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t walk them, the views are stunning. Be sure to go to the Fortress across the little bay. We did a Game of Thrones tour and had a blast. Not for everyone but daughter is huge fan so we had fun. Sit on the harbour and drink your wine and watch the boats come in with the weirdest fish you have ever seen! Pet the kitties that are everywhere , if not allergic. There is a fabulous Irish pub that has great singing at night, who cares if it’s not Croatian, it was fun. Take a bunch of pics, the place is so pretty!.

Thank you, Judy. We are in Zadar now, and we did all of those things in Dubrovnik, except for the pub (but we're going to Ireland on Thursday). It’s been hot while we’ve been in Croatia—29 C in Zadar yesterday. We walked the walls in the morning, but we still broiled. We still enjoyed it a lot and spent 2 hours. It wasn’t at all busy, which was nice. We spent the afternoon on Lokrum afterward, cooling off in the “Dead Sea” and in another little pool in a cave with a large, window-like hole overlooking the sea. We visited the fortress and sat on the Iron Throne.

We did a full-day Game of Thrones tour that included a visit to Trsteno Arboretum and to a viewpoint above the city, and it was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and gave us a lot of historical and cultural info, in addition to the GOT stuff.

And, of course, I patted and photographed every sweet kitty I met. 😻

Oh, and our lovely host let us check in when we landed and check out late, when it was time to leave for our ferry. This is yet another benefit of travelling when it’s not peak season.
