I'll be there from Nov. 7 through Nov. 20. Can anyone tell me if most shops/restaurants are closed since it's off season. Can you still take ferries to the islands. And what's the weather like? Thanks
Over 40,000 people live in Dubrovnik, so restaurants etc won’t be closed.
The islands are another matter, as much will be closed. The ferries are the lifeline for the islands and run year round, but from Dubrovnik to many of the islands, such as Hvar, it’s a catamaran not a ferry service. The cat can’t run in bad weather and therefore has a greater chance of getting cancelled - this happened a couple of days when I was there in September a couple of years ago.
Both the ferries and the cat will be on the winter timetable from early October. See jadrolinija.hr and Krilo.hr for timetables. At that time of year, I would stick to the mainland.
When I stayed on Hvar, the accommodation hosts, who were born and bred on the island said that they, along with most of their neighbours left at the end of October once their harvest had finished and they spend the winters in Split.
There are plenty of websites showing average weather for various times of year. November will be cooler and wetter.
We were in Dubrovnik in 2014 Nov 2-Nov 5. Very pleasant. Cool, but not cold. Not many tourists. Many restaurants open. We got a sobe for cheap. However, 2 weeks in Dubrovnik seems a bit long. What do you plan to do with your time? I'd say that Dubrovnik itself is a 2-3 day place. After that, there's little to do.
You might like Split. We spent several days there and liked it very much. There are several buses a day taking 3-4 hours, typically.
