Dubrovnik for someone who has trouble walking

Hi, everyone, we are thinking about a trip to Dubrovnik in mid-June. Our daughter has a mild disability, and while she can walk, she has trouble on hills and stairs and tires easily. Is the Old City particularly steep and difficult? Many thanks for your help.

The main pedestrian road in the old town (the Stradun) is flat, as is most of the old town to the south (toward the water). Heading away from the water, there are steep steps, and while there are some things worth exploring in that part of town, it's easy enough to enjoy Dubrovnik without going there.

One of the highlights of Dubrovnik is walking the walls, but that involves a lot of steps, not just to get up to the walls, but as the elevation of the walls changes. That might be a non-starter, but she might be able to enjoy portions of the wall that are more level.

There are a lot of steep narrow side streets everywhere but they are largely residential and can be avoided. Walking the walls is a real treat but it may be too much for your daughter. The flat part (main drag called Stradun) should be a piece of cake - Dubrovnik is quite compact but very popular and crowded at times.

I agree that the walls are harder to access but the main street is quite lovely to stroll and it's flat. One thing I was wondering...have you all been anywhere in Europe before? If you have, then you've probably noticed what I always notice...that accessibility is harder in Europe...at least in the cities I've visited. If this won't be your first trip over here, you'll be mostly prepared for what you'll find.

One thing that might help if you haven't firmed up travel dates is to choose your days in Dubrovnik by the days that there's fewer cruise ships in port - it will make your experience more pleasant. www.croatiatraveler.com will give you a link to cruise port arrival calendars for June.

Thank you all so much for your help! We will find a place to stay in the flatter part of town, and my daughter will have to miss the walls. (She'd rather go swimming anyway.) We live in Prague, so we are quite familiar with accessibility issues, but it is helpful to know that there are parts of Dubrovnik where she would be able to get around. Thank you again.
