My husband and I have 4 nights in Dubrovnik in late September and are wondering if we should use one of the nights for either the guidebook recommended Eat with Locals or a food tour with Dubrovnik Food Tours (also recommended.). Has anyone done either of these? We enjoy good food tours and love local food experiences but would like some feedback on what others have done.
I went to the Eat with Locals dinner. While there was an abundance of delicious food, wine and local schnapps, my feelings were a bit mixed overall. It’s hard to articulate my misgivings without sounding overly critical, so I’ll say it again: the food was delicious, and there was no shortage of variety or quantity. I ate like a happy pig, and was fairly sauced on the way out.
But: It was expensive. Much more than my dinner at the Panorama restaurant. I rather over-consumed with the price tag in mind. It’s a little ways uphill out of town (you’ll want to taxi there) and the scope of it means it’s basically your entire evening. I ended up having to plan my day around it more than I liked, and kind of rued not being able to enjoy the jumping Dubrovnik evening. This is also a long dinner with at least eight strangers, and that can go a few ways. I’m fairly sociable, but not everyone is. YMMV on the social aspect. One of the main reasons I booked the dinner was the impression that Dubrovnik’s restaurants turned over on the tourist crowd and weren’t very good as a result. I’m happy to report that isn’t the case. While the food isn’t exactly groundbreaking, I ate well everywhere I went in Dubrovnik.
Thank you! This is exactly the information I needed. It is always a hard decision rather to give up a night at a restaurant with a nice evening stroll for a special food experience. I think we will pass on the Eat with Locals as your cons were my worries!
