We will be traveling to Dubrovnik in early June from San Francisco with our two boys ages 8 & 10 years. We are staying inside the walls of the city for a few days. After that we are going to Hvar for a few days.
What are some of the best day trips from Dubrovnik? Is Mljet National Park worth the visit or are there closer better destinations for the day?

Montenegro is very close and worth visiting. I did one day trip there and another to Korcula...I enjoyed both and they were very different from one another. I don't know if there are direct ferries from Dubrovnik to Mljet, but it looks like a great place to visit...but perhaps it needs more than a day to discover.
We went to Bosnia with a tour guide and REALLY enjoyed all aspects of the day trip. Our guide stopped several places along the way and it was truly memorable. Mljet National Park is also beautiful and especially nice on a hot day.
Also consider walking down to Banje Beach and doing a half day kayak trip around Lokrum - the views from the ocean are wonderful and is an excellent way to view the town while staying nice and cool !
Lokrum Island is just a 15 minute ferry trip from the dock at old town Dubrovnik. Tee island is a nice place to have a picnic and swim from the flat rocks. Your boys will love the wildlife - friendly peacocks and bunnies. Enjoy!
