We are driving from Plitvice to Dubrovnik and need a great coastal place to spend a few days on the way. Ideas??
Zadar
Sibenik
Trogir
Split
Or an island like Korcula or Hvar. If you do that, maybe ditch the car in Split and take a passengers-only catamaran on to the island and from there to Dubrovnik. Or take car ferries.
Thanks! Is Korkula smaller, less touristy then Hvar? Cost much to take car over?
Jim
I've only been to Korcula not to Hvar, and I did it without a car, using the bus between Dubrovnik and Korcula and a catamaran between Split and Korcula.
If you take the car ferry to Korcula from Split, you'd take it to Vela Luka on the other side of the island from Korcula Town (45 minute drive?). From Korcula Town, there's a short ferry (our bus took it) over to Orebic which I'm sure doesn't cost much, and drive down the Pelješac peninsula to Dubrovnik (also the route our bus took - a pretty drive). Not sure about the cost of the ferry from Split to Vela Luka.
Not sure about the car ferry connections between Hvar and Dubrovnik - you could google it.
My understanding is that Hvar is more upscale and more "party town" than Korcula, whereas Korcula is more of a traditional vacation town. Korcula Town is a walled city roughly similar to Dubrovnik. Can't speak for Hvar. I think both islands would be touristy in high season; off of high season, both might be pretty slow. I think choosing one island over another would come down to personal taste more than lack of tourists.
What month?
Hvar is not so party/upscale outside of July and August, and you need not stay in Hvar town itself.

You could stay at Split and do day trips. What kind of place are you looking for?
