Hi everyone! Wondering if some knowledgeable folks can help with this. My parents drove from the Istrian Peninsula to Venice in 2018. What should have been a 3 hour trip took almost 12 hours! Lots of rules about which borders they could cross. I've tried to figure out what happened since they may have to do that drive again, but I can't find any info. Has anyone here run into issues driving from the Istrian Peninsula (Rovinj, Pula etc) back into Italy? Many thanks!!
I vaguely remember reading about border crossings that are only open to residents of the two countries involved. I wonder whether that's what your parents stumbled upon. Just a guess.
There are occasional border back-ups between Slovenia and Croatia, I think, during vacation season, but I don't think they're particularly extreme.
Is there a way they could leave or drop the car in Croatia and take the passenger ferry to Venice from Istria?
That’s about a four-hour drive. Some rental companies will not allow crossing from Croatia to Slovenia and then Italy. Almost all that allow it will charge a hefty one-way charge that can be US$1,000. Some levy charges to cross an international border. But the biggest issue may be the availability of a rental car.
If you go to Rentalcars.com or Europcar you may find no car rentals are available this summer, anyway.
Can your parents take the 4-hour ferry from Rovinj to Venice?
