Looking for the best route from Rovinj to Plitvice Lakes. From Rijeka it looks like there are two routes that work: One on the E65 heading towards Zagreb and then the E71 south getting off onto the smaller road around Ostarije. The other route takes the E65 down the Coast to Senj and then over the mountains towards the Lakes. Both are fairly similar times according to Google maps. Is either better/worse/more scenic? We're doing the drive in mid-June on a Thursday if that makes any difference.

We just did this last weekend and we used the autoroutes. A8 to Rijeka, then A6 towards Zagreb/Split, then A1 south towards Split. We exited onto small highways that were narrow, slow and very interesting. 3256 to D1. There are cash tolls for this -maybe 60 kuna. It took about 4.5 hours.
