Hello, I need your help planning this day. We are thinking of starting the day in Ljubljana and drive to Skoojan caves. After the caves, stop at Predjama castle and drive from there to Plitvice for the night. Is this a reasonable plan?
From Predjama to Plitvice, what is the easiest route? Google maps shows 3 options. First option is to go back towards Ljubljana, then towards Zagreb and then to Plitvice. Second and third option takes us to Rijeka and then either E65/E71/D42 or E65/D1.
I drove from Rijeka to Plitvice along the coast and then inland. It is 2 lane all the
way and there were a lot of trucks which made things slower. So I'd opt for either
backtracking to Ljubljana/Zagreb (advantage - highway at least some of the drive),
or go inland from Rijeka, which seems shorter than the backtrack.
If you decide to go through Rijeka, then going to Skocjan first will result in a bit
of a backtrack to go to Predjama. Consider reversing the order in that case.
Also, if your goal is just to see one of the caves, you could do Predjama and
Postojna caves all in one stop and then drive to Plitvice from there.
Since you are going into another country, you want to make sure your car has
any highway vignette required to drive in Croatia, or be sure to pay tolls manually.
