Driving from Plitvice to Split, Route and Lunch suggestions?

My Husband and I will be driving a rental car from Plitvice Hotel to Split, drop the car in Split, then catch a catamaran to Korcula for the night. Will be getting a morning start and hope to catch a 16:30-17:00 ferry so have a nice comfortable pace I believe. We would prefer to drive coastline and stop for lunch at some lovely town along the way. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Also, how far in advance should I reserve our catamaran booking online?

Both Zadar and Sibenik are on the route. Both are worth a stop. I think it's about 3 hrs drive-time. So, if you start at 8 AM, you have about 5 hrs of excess time. Make it 4 to ensure you can get to the ferry after dropping the car.

You could also consider the bus. Renting a car is probably expensive. The bus is about $25/person. Flixbus is very nice.

Personally, I’d feel a lot more relaxed getting to Split and having a leisurely lunch there. You just never know what may happen on the road. I recently took the bus from Split to Plitvice and was delayed an hour by inclement weather and intense traffic. The roads connecting them are few and generally two lanes. Split is pretty awesome to boot, a couple hours walking around would be rewarding.

Except in high, high season it seems like there’s seats available on most ferries. Still, you can buy months in advance so why not if you’re sure of your schedule.

Sibenik is a stunning town on the coast that I would plan on stopping at during this 2.5 hour drive.
Have a great trip!

Truly appreciate each response - awrzesinski, your considerations will weight heavily into our plan depending on how much ‘extra’ time we end of having for the drive.
