We are looking to drive from Dubrovnik to Split and wanted to get on a ferry to an island for a night on the way (ideally with the car). Do you have any suggestions for an itinerary like that?
As an alternate, we are open to just taking a ferry from Dubrovnik to an island (spending a night) and then continuing by ferry to Split. We will however have two young kids and luggage, so we want to go with the more convenient option. We will be there in the first week of September so the ferries are limited.
Do you have any one island you highly recommend we see (we are considering between Korcula, Hvar and Brac). We would like to see an island that has nice beaches, but also a town and maybe vineyards or lavender farms.
Please advise on the best route. Thanks so much.
I am not sure what is meant by you for a nice beach. The beaches in croatia usually have wonderful blue seaview. However, the sand is not fine. Most of them are pebble beaches. If you want both of them (fine and white sand beach with good sea view), croatia is not the place for you. You may go to Phuket, Samui, Langkwai in South East Asia.
The idea is to see beaches in Croatia. I am aware that they are pebble beaches and will make sure we have water shoes. Can you go into he water near these beaches or is it too rocky for that?
We have already been to places like Phuket and Langkawi. All beautiful, but looking to explore the Dalmatian coastline this year. thanks
Zlatni Rat beach in Bol has soft sand and is gorgeous (I still bought and used water shoes there). I took a bus there from Supetar on Brac island. Check out the google images of Zlatni Rat if you get a chance.
If you want to see vineyards, then an efficient and lovely trip would be to drive through Pelješac peninsula and head for Korcula. That was my favorite island of the two I visited, although Brac had the most gorgeous beach and various villages throughout the island.
would it make sense to drive the Pelješac peninsula to Korcula from Dubrovnik or Split?
On a map, it looks closer to Dubrovnik. I believe you can park/leave the car in Orebic or take it on the ferry with you. I took a day trip there and, I believe, the bus went right on the ferry to Korcula.
In hvar, there are also famous vineyards, too.

This is one of the wine tasting tours.
You may want to consider just going to one of the islands as a day trip eg Mljet from Dubrovnik or Brac from Split (the closest island).
Much accommodation on the islands has a 3-4 night minimum booking period and ferry services are relatively infrequent and expensive.
Zlatni Rat can be full of hundreds of booze cruise day boat trippers, even in September. A day trip would permit you to travel by the quicker catamarans.
The lavender is harvested in June, so there won't be anything to see in September. Many places sell lavender bags.
I didn't realize lavender is harvested in June - that definitely helps us eliminate some things on our list. Thank you!
If we chose to rent a car and drive from Dubrovnik to Split are there any coastal towns or other sights you recommend we visit/stop at along the way?
2 years ago, we took the ferry from Dubrovnik to Split. It was inexpensive, filled with folks, made 3-4 island stops, and great fun. I would recommend that ferry. You could stop in Hvar for the night - it is a pretty large town, and I am sure there are plenty of accomodations. While many comments about beaches are correct, note that Split has a perfectly nice, well-patrolled sand beach right in town not 200 m from Diocletian's palace.
Did you get off the ferry, or stay on the whole time from Dubrovnik to split? How long did it take and what did you do while on the ferry?
