Driving from Dubrovnik to Spilt

Hello Community

How easy it it to drive from Dubrovnik to Spilt? Renting a car seems inexpensive but not sure about the freeway/highways.
I will be renting in Dubrovnik and dropping the car in Split. We'll be in there in May.
From google maps the coast drive is the longest but pretty versus the other route which is quicker but has tolls.
What do i need to about the tolls, is part of the car rental or do i need to carry money with me?

Also thought about hiring a driver but have no idea how to do that?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Last May, we rented a car from Sixt in Zagreb and drove through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro.

They were excellent to rent from and told us how to obtain a "toll sticker" at a convenience/gas station so you can drive on the toll roads. It was easy to drive - the roads were excellent.

I don't remember stopping to pay tolls like we do in Italy. Can anyone else help with that question ?

If you don't want to deal with driving a car, there are easy, cheap, nice, modern buses that run every day between the two cities (no need to hire a driver). I took that option and it turned out great - was able to look out the window the whole time and enjoy the view. If you choose to drive, then I would take the coastal road - should not be difficult at all.

The drive is pretty easy. You will be forced to cross over into Bosnia at the Neum corridor and then back into Croatia a few kilometers later. If you are just going to enjoy the drive and not stop along the way, you can either take the catamaran up the coast or take the bus. Both take about four hours and are much cheaper than hiring a private driver.

Regarding private drivers, you would only need that option if you 1) don't want to drive yourself and 2) want to have some custom route/stops that is not easily reached by bus.

The system that Carla talks about whereby you buy a sticker, known as a Vignette, and put it on your windscreen does not operate in Croatia. Vignettes are used by Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and a few other countries in Europe.

In Croatia, you pay a toll to use the motorways. The way the system works is that you take a ticket from a machine as you enter the motorway, and surrender it as you leave the motorway. If you loose your ticket, it is assumed you have driven from the furthest point on the motorway, and you are charged accordingly. You pay the toll either with cash or with a credit card – Visa and Mastercard are accepted, I don't know about Amex.

It's a glorious, scenic drive - but better if someone else like a bus driver does it, leaving you free to admire the views down the cliffs into the crystal clear Adriatic below. If you do drive, however, you may want to break your journey at Ston, at the base of the Pelješac peninsula, which has 5 km of city walls (to keep intruders out of the old kingdom of Ragusa!), salt pans and the best mussels and oysters in all, Croatia.
