I’m renting a car in Split through Alamo. Has anyone done a day trip to Mostar, using an Alamo car rental. I understand a blue card may be necessary, but I haven’t seen much if Alamo will allow me to drive to Bosnia. Please let me know if you’ve had success, and how it went. Thank you.
I would strongly suggest asking Alamo.
I can’t remember the company we rented from from the Dubrovnik airport but they specifically asked me whether or not I was going to be crossing any borders and more specific Montenegro or Bosnia, I said yes to both and had to pay an additional fee (think it was like $60-80 USD)
I do believe in Bosnia they did look at the insurance with the car, although I don’t think anything changed with the insurance after I paid the charges, so take it with what you will.
Perhaps the rental car companies there know the road conditions, car theft rates, and repair scams in Bosnia. They're different countries.
There was a fee for the "pass" (Vinyette) or whatever it was called to cross the border from Croatia to Bosnia, I recall it not being very expensive 20 to 40? Of course the rental car already had one on it so we really didn't need to pay. The fee to cross the border was about E5 so no big deal there either. The roads are 5 star, so nice and well surfaced. However, I would not do a day trip from Split to Mostar, the distance is just too far, and a day trip will only give you a few hours in the middle of day. If you can try to workout a two-night stay in Mostar I would. We did two nights and I wish we had done 3 nights. And not that anyone is asking but my Xfinity phone service did not work in Bosnia even though they said it would, luckily my travel buddy had T-mobile and it worked just fine. J
Cross Border Fee within the EU countries (including Switzerland and United Kingdom) is applicable in amount of 20 EUR (VAT included) . For Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo, and every non-EU country (excluding Switzerland and United Kingdom) a Cross Border Fee of 50 EUR (VAT included) applies per rental. In case of travelling through EU and non-EU countries (except Switzerland and United Kingdom) both charges of Cross Border Fee are applicable. The green card covers the rented vehicle with basic insurance (T.P.I.) as long as it remains in the borders of the country for which it is issued. Road assistance or car replacement while driving abroad is available. Exception: The 10 km long transit from Split to Dubrovnik driving through Bosnia and Herzegovina is free of charge.
