Driving Croatia to Slovania

Could somebody clarify exactly what we need to know when driving from Croatia to Slovenia and back? It appears from the rental company that there is an additional fee when we cross into another country. Do we just let them know when we check the car out? I also saw on a YouTube that there's something called a visitor pass required? Does anyone know what that is? And how does our car insurance work if we are coming from the US? Do we need additional insurance? Of course we will check with our local company but what has been your experience?

Thank you everyone!

We have driven from Croatia to Ljubljana many times. The extra fee to drive country to country was around $90 last August. We drove to Italy this time. But you must tell the rental company. No extra insurance is needed.

You only need the vignette if you are driving on the highway. If you take the old, scenic roads it is not needed. If you do get one, you can purchase it on line.
