Drive itinerary Zagreb all the way to Dubrovnik

Can two couples do this effectively time wise and cost wise?
Is the cheapest Large car, Skoda Octavia, adequate?
Rentacarsplit.net is who I'm thinking of using, about $450 with insurances,
and including 65 euro drop charge.
Fly into Zagreb and stay downtown two nights without a car.
Get car and go to|:
Plitvice Lakes for 2 nights,
Split (or Trogir?) for 1 night and most of next day,
Only drive a couple hours to Makarska for 1 night,
Bigger day of driving the next day 5 hours or more?
Stopping at Ston and passing in and out of Bosnia
And arriving in Dubrovnik late afternoon or early evening?

Rest and enjoy Dubrovnik for 5 nights in same Sobe or vrbo.
Best side trips: Kotor (by boat possible?), Mostar,
An island like Mljet or Korcula.

Thanks!

For a total three week trip we plan to fly from DBV to Italy for the final 9 nights.

I think that is actually a very good itinerary. I guess some comments:

In general, renting a car best, more flexibility, and for four, probably cost effective. Verify border crossings with your rental agency, they may not care about passing through Bosnia on the stretch from Split to Dubrovnik on the motorway, but a side trip to Mostar they may. For Mostar though, I would head there after Split or Makarska on your way to Ston, maybe spend a night.

For Kotor, probably boat not an option from Dubrovnik, Car or a tour probably the best bet.

If you are interested in Korcula, best option may be after the night in Ston, head up the peninsula, Korcula is just a mile or so off shore from Orebic, lots of ferries, do it then before heading to Dubrovnik

If you plan to take the car onto a ferry, then mention that when reserving the car, along with your other destinations. This might not be an issue in Croatia, but it is in Greece.
