Looking for easy day trips from Zagreb via public transportation, not a tour. Visited Plitvice Lakes last summer, but rented a car. So awesome!
Today I took the bus to Samobor. Easy, low key, nice hike up to ruins. Thinking of Varazdin tomorrow, but the bus is at 8:00 am which is too early, and the next one is after 11:00. Bus is around 1 hr 40. Hoped to be on board at 9:30, 10:00. Guessing it's my best option, but thought you traveller's might have other suggestions. Thanks!

Varaždin is a good idea, you can catch the later bus and still have a good amount of time to explore the city. Other suggestions are Trakošćan Castle, Medvednica Mountain, Samobor, and Krapina.

Trakošćan Castle is a fun day trip. We drove but I’m sure there are buses or tours that go there. A google search or a check with the TI might help.

With only 2 days, I took the bus to Samobor one day, and the 11:00 bus to Varazdin the next. I took a later bus back to Zagreb, so I had plenty of time to explore. Without a car, the best way to visit Trakošća Castle would be with a tour. I prefer having the freedom and flexibility to wander without a dictated time frame, so I decided to save it for next time and rent a car.
