I have read many recommendations to see Plitvice only with an overnight experience. While that is a more enjoyable tour it simply will not be possible with our set itinerary. Please can anyone recommend a tour, private is preferred, that would get us there very early in the day and hopefully avoid some of the crowd. (Sunday September 25)

Just checking--are you aware of Krka park? It is similar and much closer to Split--just an option, good luck!

It's not really feasible as a day trip by public transport, it's something like 3.30 each way by bus (and few buses).
But as suggested it can be done by day tour.
If you have the time, I think it's much better to stay the night there... it's very hot
If you don't mind that, then you can do the tour from Split.

My brother took this tour and loved it!
It makes it really convenient to go from Split for the day if you don't have time to stay overnight!

Unfortunately, visiting Plitvice during day-tripping hours leads to a seriously degraded experience.
