Day trip from Split to Hvar and Vis

Hello, we have 3 full days in Split, Sept. 4,5,6. We plan on 2 days for Split, but would like to take a day trip to the islands. Since this is our only opportunity should we just go to Hvar and do we try Hvar and Vis? From what I've read those are the most popular islands. What about the blue and green caves? Is this all doable in one day trip, coming back to Split at night?
Thanks for any tips :)

Check the ferry schedule on the Jadrolinia ferry line (http://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/ferry-croatia). It may not work out to do the 2 islands in one day (due to lack of direct connection between the two islands without backtracking to Split), but either on its own should be quite easy. A friend of mine took a day trip from Split to Hvar and came back the same evening - very straightforward. I went to Brac and spent a few days there. Very enjoyable to take a ferry to any island - have fun!

I don't think 2 islands in one day is doable at all, you will have to pick just one. Vis is further away from Split and isn't served by as many ferries as Hvar, so visiting it on a day trip may end up being difficult if the timetables don't work. Hvar is always a popular choice, although you could consider Brac instead, which also has more departures than Vis and is a lovely island, too.

Appreciate the tips. I'm guessing we should just enjoy all that Hvar has to offer and relax :) It's hard when you want to see everything in a country! Brac does look wonderful also, saw pictures of it.

You may also want to consider the island of Korcula vs. Hvar. Both have their pluses and minuses, and either will make for a great day trip.

You might also consider a daytrip to Krka National Park with Portal Day Tours. This was a highlight of my 12-day trip to Croatia.

If you are only going for the day, you don't want to spend half your time on a boat, so visit Hvar or Brac, as these are the closest to Split and have several sailings a day.

Thank you for all tips. We have decided on Hvar. We do want to relax and not be worried about catching the next boat. We will just have to come back to Croatia for more island hopping!! Appreciate the insight! Can't wait to be there.
