Dalmation coast sept 24 planning help for group of 8

I am planning a 1st time trip to Croatia for our extending family of 8-3 kids (age 25-32 ) with their partners, my husband and myself. We are all pretty active and love the outdoors. Some are more adventurous than others. My husband and I will be landing in Zagreb and taking in sights on our way south and plan on spending 14 -16 day in Croatia. Our kids may not have as much time based on their work schedule, so we may have some met up with us along our itinerary. Our family is spread out in the US and the UK and we want to have some down time to hang out while exploring Croatia.

We are considering either renting a private charter to do multiple islands or just taking a ferry and getting an airbnb house with 4 bedroom for 3-4 days on 1 island. I have been looking at rental in Hvar, Korkula or Vis.

1. do you recommend a rental on an island instead of a charter? if so, what Island and for how long?
2. If you recommend a charter, which Island do you recommend we go to, and for how long?

My husband is a good sailor, I am a bit of landlubber but love to paddle board, canoe and kayak.

Thanks
Jenny

Hi, Jenny!
You should consider renting a house on an island like Hvar, Korčula, or Vis. I'd say aim 3-4 days for one island. You can also charter a boat and explore multiple islands along with coastal towns, starting from Split or Dubrovnik, for example.

It's really just a personal preference--it is certainly one of the great places to sail, but being on land would be more relaxing to me--you can do whatever you want that way--hike, etc. Given that you have different parties coming, maybe it would also be less logistically challenging.
All of the islands are gorgeous, so I would not recommend one over the other at that time of year (in July/Aug, I would avoid some). All have ample enough dining for a few days. Hvar is probably the most convenient for day trips.

The one challenge I might foresee is fining a house that large, but I am sure it is possible. Many families convert their homes into apartments for rentals, and there are local agencies as well as the large companies.
