Croatia/Slovenia - When to go?

Hi all,

We are currently in the early stages of planning a trip to Croatia/Slovenia next year. We are thinking end of May beginning of June. We will be going for 2 weeks. We were concerned with going to the Dalmatian islands at the end of May because all the ferries won't be running. By this time will all the ferries be running? In terms of best weather/crowds/ferries running when would be the ideal time to go in May/June?

We would be starting in Dubrovnik and ending in Ljubljana.

Thanks for all the help.

Some ferries and catamarans run year round. I would lay out a specific agenda first, then figure out if you can do it without a seasonal ferry or catamaran. You won't know 2018's ferry schedule until 2018, but you can guess based on this year's.

With only two weeks, you aren't going to have a lot of time to do a bunch of island hopping if you are including Ljubljana. So not many ferries may be involved. A basic itinerary of say Dubrovnik, an island like Hvar or Korcula, Split, Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb (or Istria) and Ljubljana can certainly be done in May mostly by bus (or rent a car for the Croatia portion and take a bus or train on to Slovenia). You may have more options for catamarans in the summer that make it easier to get from place to place, most likely.

You are always playing the odds with the weather. I had decent weather mid-May two years ago when I visited Croatia, but you never know. As you get into June it will get more and more crowded. I'd guess better weather in June than May, based on the odds, but also more crowds on the coast.

Thanks Andrew that makes sense. Our plan is to stay on one of the islands for 2 nights then head to Split so we really only need to get on a ferry twice.

If you choose Korcula, you can drive up Pelješac peninsula to Orebić and take the short local ferry from there to Korcula Town. If you take a bus from Dubrovnik, it uses the same ferry. There is daily catamaran service from Korcula Town to Split, year-round I think if you don't have a car; if you have a car, you can drive on Korcula to Vela Luka and take a car ferry from there to Split.

You can probably figure out something for Hvar too but I didn't there so am not familiar with the logistics. (My catamaran from Korcula also stopped in Hvar before hitting Split.)

The islands are not going to be as busy in May as they will be in the summer, I think. I visited Korcula one year in October when it was pretty dead, though restaurants were still open. But the season was clearly ending. Sometimes a town that seems dead can put a damper on your enjoyment of it but maybe not.

I'm here right now...come on over. Low 80s but not bad by the water here in Zadar. Went from Berlin to Zagreb first. People put down Zagreb but I loved it...small version of Vienna or Prague, and didn't have to go to those cities to have the same experience. Most people are very friendly and speak at least basic English. Maybe will be my retirement place...I'm serious!

Sorry, Scott, but I respectfully disagree that Zagreb is just like Prague. I loved Prague. I did not love Zagreb. I would not equate them in any meaningful way. (On the upside, Zagreb isn't overrun with tourist mobs the way Prague now sadly is.)

I just returned from Slovenia and Croatia, visiting memorial day weekend through June 7th. I started in Slovenia and worked my way down and by the time I reached Split, all of the catamarans were running the summer schedules. I thought this was the perfect time to go (but not having been before I have nothing to compare to). It's sunny and warm, the water is still a little chilly but swimmable, and best of all, the crowds are manageable. It seemed crowded to me and I was assured this was nothing compared to July and August. I plan to return and will likely go at the same time.

Thanks Katherine! We were actually thinking of going the exact same time next year. Did you do Rick Steves 2 week tour by car?

There is no issue with getting to any island in late May or even earlier, particularly if you have two weeks to work with.
The only issue with late May is that the sea is still quite chilly for swimming. It is the ideal time imo, only September would compete since I like swimming.

I did use his itinerary as a guide but I dropped Istria because I only had 12 days and I wanted to go to both Kotor and Mostar. I had a car in Slovenia, then took the train to Zagreb so I could catch a tour that stopped at Plitvice on it's way to Split. I went against the advice on this forum and did Plitvice as a day trip. The crowds were fine since it was still early in the season but I can see why you would want to be there early during peak season. I loved this time of year there so I hope you end up going then!

Thanks Valadelphia for the information! Going for a swim isn't a make or break on when we go, so that's good to know.

Thanks Katherine! That's another reason we wanted to go during this time since there are little less of crowds.

Now onto the fun part of figuring out some of the details of the trip.

We have been to Croatia 4 times since 2011. It's a great place to go. Inexpensive, friendly, wonderful sights. In 2014, we were in Dubrovnik on Nov 4-5. It was great - not cold, but cool. There were very few people. I enjoy travel during the fall. This year, we were in Zagreb, Zadar, Sibenik in early June. Not real crowded, but there were some tourists. Ljubljana is also wonderful. We are not swimmers, so that is not an issue. We love the cafes, the beer, the wine, the food. The sights are great.
