Croatia/Slovenia Itinerary Advice

This is my grand plan and I would appreciate any advice as far as if it doable in the amount of time we have.
We fly in/out of Split at the end of July this year.
We are not renting a car. We like to cover a lot of ground when we travel and use public transportation. Staying in the Split area the whole time does not appeal to us and we would love to get to Slovenia because it looks amazing AND we would have another country checked off the list.
We are not planning on Dubrovnik and chose the Krka Lakes over Plitvice because we will not have a car and would prefer to swim.

Day 1 Arrive mid day and explore Split.
Day 2 Day trip to Krka National Park to swim in and see the water falls. Sleep in Split
Day 3 Fly from Split to Zagreb. (45min flight) Catch the train to Ljubljana. Sleep in Ljubljana
Day 4 Explore Ljubljana area. Sleep in Ljubljana
Day 5 Train to Zagreb. Evening flight to Split. Sleep in Split or Trogir
Day 6 Split/Trogir (considering Trogir instead of split for these last 3 nights because rooms are cheaper and it is closer to the airport for our departure day. Also we will have already had 2 nights in Split at the beginning)
Day 7 Split/Trogir
Day 8 Depart SPU

We are a group of 5-2 adults, 2 active and very mobile senior citizens and 1 seven year old with a lot of stamina.
Any advice on the plan would be appreciated. It looks doable on paper and I understand my flight times and train times need to compliment each other. Thanks and happy travels!

I think you have a tight schedule. Renting a car would make your life easier. We got our car in Split and returned it to Zagreb when we left. The highway from to Ljubliana was easy and we drove up to Lake Bled for a morning. If you rented a car you could fly into Split and leave from Zagreb. I know Zagreb gets mixed reviews but we really enjoyed it also. Krka was beautiful and you will enjoy swimming with the "natives". Ljubliana is beautiful and we really enjoy it. WOW I guess we enjoyed everything. Good luck

I understand you like to travel fast, but I think the currenty itinerary is of the "physically doable but not enjoyable" kind. I would reconsider Slovenia. Despite the short flight, I don't think it's practical to lose two days in travel to get to spend a single day in Ljubljana. Renting a car won't help, either - it's still a 5 to 6-hour drive per direction. You also haven't mentioned your interests. What drew you in when you were considering Slovenia, the nature? Ljubljana is a very charming city, but if I went all the way from Split to Slovenia, I would try to go beyond the capital, too and visit one of the Alpine lakes, the national park or a cave, go into the great outdoors. Both lakes (Bohinj and Bled) offer some great swimming in the summer, too.

However, I understand that you have a limited amount of time so that may not be practical. If Slovenia is a must and the flights aren't booked yet, look into open-jaw tickets, flying either into Ljubljana or into Venice and booking a quick shuttle transfer to Ljubljana and then flying out of Split. It would eliminate one travel day, which, given that you only have 6 days on the ground, is a considerable saving and you could spend it visiting Bled or Bohinj.

Otherwise, if you want to add another country and Slovenia is not a necessity, consider visiting Bosnia instead. It has some wonderful sights and is much closer to Split, although admittedly much harder to get around using public transportation, but not impossibly so. You could also visit one of the islands around Split, which are very beautiful but much easier to reach.
