Croatia/Romania car rental

I don't know if anyone can help me here or at least direct me to the right place. I need to pick up a car in Bucharest, Romania and drop it off in Dubrovnik, Croatia. I'm getting mixed answers from many rental companies about this possibility. Has anyone done this?

A 2nd option would be picking up in Bucharest and dropping in Budapest, Hungary and then picking up a new car there and dropping in Dubrovnik, Croatia. I know this is not just all about Croatia but hoping someone here can help me! Thank you!

I often will call Autoeurope for a trickier rental. They are based in the U.S. and agents speak English and tend to be knowledgeable. Sometimes one way rentals aren't even an option. When they are an option, dropping in another country can be quite pricey

Your first option looks impossible: the second one incurs one-way fees totaling in excess of $2000.00, on top of the rental fee and taxes.

At least that is what I find on expedia.

Hi, as others have said, this will be difficult and very expensive. Just out of curiosity, is there some reason you need to have a car continuously in all those countries?

It really would help to know your motivation for this. If it's simply to take a road trip throughout those countries, you could always rent a car in Bucharest, then drive to someplace like Cluj Napoca where you can drop it off. From there you could fly to Dubrovnik or Budapest and rent another car there.

We want to do a road trip for the entire trip as there are so many things we’d like to see that require car transportation as the easiest. We have looked at returning the car in Romania and flying to Croatia but was hoping to avoid that. We’d rather see the countryside than take our time to fly between cities and spend it returning and picking up cars and being in airports.

Okay, I definitely get that. But be prepared to spend a LOT of money driving through more than one country. You can still effectively do what you want by driving most places. But a lot depends on what you want to see. If you are hoping to visit Maramures in Romania and need a car (which is helpful there, I agree), you could drive there and spend several days in the area, then head back down to Cluj Napoca and get a Flix bus there to Budapest. This would allow you still to see the scenery but save you a lot of money by not having to pay those extra charges for returning the car in a different country.

Then again, once you are in Budapest, visit there and pick up another rental car on your way out. Take that to some place near the Hungarian border, and pick up another car to take you to Dubrovnik.

So really it boils down to how much you want to pay for those out-of-country charges, and whether the additional cost is worth it. Also, as was pointed out above, there are some agencies that will not allow it.

I would also STRONGLY suggest that you check the rental car insurance. I don't know if you plan on paying the insurance/deductible charges directly to the company or if you plan on using travel insurance or a credit card that would cover the CDW. But regardless, make sure that all the countries you plan on driving in are covered under your plan.

Pam, I just did a couple of dummy searches on AutoEurope. The first one was on https://www.autoeurope.com, which is the US website (but still rents for foreign travel). That showed NO options for picking up the car in Bucharest and dropping if off in Dubrovnik.

However, when I went to the European site—https://www.autoeurope.eu—it listed a number of cars. I put in a dummy date of pickup in Bucharest (airport) on August 20 and drop off in Dubrovnik (airport) on August 26 (6 days), and it listed rates ranging from €616 ($721 today) to €1075 ($1260) depending on the car (from mini to luxury).

That's still pricey and would definitely vary depending on your date, the type of car and the length of the rental period, but it's worth checking out.
