Croatia itinerary starting in Dubrovnik

Solo traveler without car flying to Dubrovnik last week in Sept. I'd like to do day trips to Cavtat and Montenegro and can figure that out myself. What I can't figure out is if I ferry to Korcula, spend a day there, even the night, where shall I visit next that isn't getting me further from Dubrovnik? It seems Hvar, Bol, Split, etc are just going to make a very long return back to Dubrovnik. Any suggestions for other islands or towns to visit leaving Korcula either by ferry or bus? I see there are 3 ferry companies. How do I know which one to choose? Are all 3 terminals close to each other? Thank you for any suggestions!

To answer your ferry question, we like Krilo and have used them many times. Jadrolinija usually runs car ferries and takes longer and isn’t as nice. TP line is fairly New so i can’t comment. They all leave Dubrovnik from the Port of Gruž. It would be a shame to miss seeing Split. It is so different from Dubrovnik - Medieval vs Roman. The ferry from Split to Dubrovnik is 4.5 hours.

Because Split is a transport hub, it is likely going to be just as fast to get back to Dubrovnik as some other places one might suggest. Check the Krilo schedule carefully, as those fast catamarans are probably your best bet. https://www.krilo.hr/en/sailing-schedule/
Also check Jadrolinija catamarans. Perhaps the Elafiti islands or Mljet?
Perhpas Mostar? That takes about as long as the bay of Kotor by bus.
The only other operators I see is this one: https://www.tp-line.hr/en/
How much time do you need to fill, and what are you interested in? Most of the options are mostly nature (Elafiti islands, Mljet, Lastovo)

Yes it is a shame that I can't make it work going to Split. I only have 7 days and there isn't a flight back to Newark from Split that doesn't require a long layover or 2 stops. Thank you for the ferry info. The Elafiti Islands look interesting.

Yes, that area is gorgeous--I only passed through on the bus between Dubrovnik and Korcula a couple times, but I hope to get back one day. You can also stay on Korcula and explore the island via bus, hop over to mainland to hike.

I wouldn't waste my time on a day trip to Montenegro. After Dubrovnik, Kotor (where most of those on day trips end up) is not that dramatic. But if you want to spend a few nights, I like Montenegro more than Croatia but that means at least going down the coast to Budva and Stari Bar and Ulcinj.; and better, then going inland to the mountains, Tara Canyon and Ostrog Monastery.
