Croatia in August with kids… any avoiding huge crowds?

Hi all! First time posting. We are a family of five with kids 8, 10 and 11. We need to be in Vienna in late August and thought we would add a week to the front end of our trip in Croatia. However… is there a way to enjoy the islands in Croatia and avoid large crowds or is that impossible in August? What would you suggest as a week long itinerary? Our ideal would be to pick a home base and do island hopping. We don’t need to tackle the country. We just want to experience a new place with our kids and enjoy the time exploring together. Thanks in advance!

With a week, I would stay in one or two places only, but maybe scale back the notion of "island hopping" as that will be where the burden of crowds appears, and schedules do not always allow for convenient day trips. Find a great accommodation and then explore the outer reaches of whatever island you choose with a car (or boat, there are small ones that can be rented).
Just embrace the crowds, that is really all you can do in summer if you want coast.

That’s great advice. Do you have opinions on which island(s) would be best for a family with younger kids? We won’t be taking advantage of nightlife and would love to avoid that scene. Thank you!

I would go wherever the travel is easiest, as the entire coast has gorgeous island options. Hvar is know for partying, but otherwise it's all fairly equal. August is a party everywhere though--Could you put the Croatia bit after the Vienna portion? I would try to do so if possible. Those few days could make a real difference!

I just posted about traveling with a nine year old, so I am hoping for the same sort of advice. Wondering what would be the best home base and hoping you get some good answers. :)
