Croatia: Battle of the Islands - Hvar vs. Korcula vs. Rab

Hi All-

Planning a 2 week Croatia / Bosnia trip for May - we'd like to look at spending a couple of days on one of the coastal islands, but are struggling to decide which one. We've been wavering between Korcula and Hvar, and recently have also been looking at Rab (which isn't really all that close, but we are around long enough we could shuffle things around to accomodate).

I'm hoping someone with experience here can help us to decide - what do you think are the pros and cons of each? Which would you do? We're looking to spend 2 nights on either (somewhat depending on ferry schedules) and can have a car if we need it. Will Hvar be hopping yet in mid-May?

Thanks! This is a great forum.

In order of my preference: Rab, Korčula and Hvar. Rab is very beautiful...imagine a cleaner version of Venice and without canals. A great place to just relax and enjoy. By comparison, there seemed to be more to do on Korčula and it's fascinating. Hvar, while very pleasant, came in third and is nice enough. Transportation considerations may well influence your decision.

I didn't go to Rab, but between Korcula and Hvar I'd give the edge to Hvar. Korcula's old town is very pretty and very compact, and I had an amazing dinner there, but I kind of ran out of stuff to see and do. Hvar had much more to fill my time there. I also had an amazing dinner there. I hired one of the taxi boats to give me an excursion around the neighboring islands, I rented a scooter and explored some of the island outside the town, and I enjoyed the scenery there more than Korcula.

It's a close call, though.
