I read in one of Rick's guides that they only accept Croatian currency and sometimes credit cards in Dubrovnik. We need to get to the Old City from the port so we need to take the bus or a taxi (I don't feel comfortable using my credit card in a taxi there). Rick's guide also said that there's "an ATM" in the port. One ATM for three ships' passengers would mean a very long lineup! Is this information correct? Any suggestions?
You could have your bank order some--if you want to have cash in hand, I can't think of anything else!
There are dozens of ATMs around the port. You could have your taxi stop at one on the way to the old city spot you are going to. (If there is a line for the ATMs, there will also be a line for the taxis.)
Your cruise ship might also make some Croatian currency available before you exit the ship. Check with them.
I have not been there, but only one ATM in the port? Highly unlikely. Maybe he meant one bank location with multiple ATMs.
I see no reason not to use your credit card as long as it is one with a chip. No less safe than any other taxi anywhere in the world.
In June 2018, I found that many of the shops in the old city of Dubrovnik listed prices in both Croatian currency AND in euros. If you have euros with you, it's quite possible that a taxi driver would accept them in payment. Anyone else been able to do so?
If my memory is accurate, the public toilet near the Pile Gate will only take kunas in small denominations, not euros or the denominations of kunas you usually get from the ATM. Be warned!
Yesterday, we paid for our taxi ride from Dubrovnik to tfhe airport in US dollars. We'd spent our kunas and were short on Euros. Our hotel called a service that charged the flat rate and converted it to dollars. Although it is preferrable to pay in the local currency, you will find that most places in Croatia will accept Euros. If the lines at the ATMs are long, ask at the taxis stand whether drivers accept whatever currency you have.. Uber is also available in Dubrovik.
We also found that most Croatians will accept euros. Friends told me they can always use them and some are taking them in case they change to the euro upon full acceptance to the EU.
Yes, we just got back a couple of weeks ago and found, most shops take euros, some American dollars. In fact, one girl saw I had a few dollars and bought them from me, so she'd have them to give change back! Our cab driver in Dubrovnik and Rovinj, took Euros as well. Just ask before you get in cab. The Croatian people we encountered were all very nice!
Thanks for your replies. We'll use Euros!
