Catching the train from Zagreb to Kranj, Slovenia

I am trying to figure out where the main train station is in Zagreb. We will need to take the train from Zagreb to Kranj on October 2. Where do I buy the tickets? Do I get them ahead of time. I don't know which is the correct website for finding them nor do I know which train station. Does the train travel everyday to Kranj? Please let me know. We leave in 7 weeks.

Mary, to find the location of Zagreb Glavni Kolod, station, open up Google Maps and search for "Zagreb train station" and the location will pop right up. It's right in the center of town.

The train to Slovenia is a bargain...if you buy your tickets at the station in Zagreb. They are 9 euros person to Ljubljana. If you try to buy them online or through some other broker, they cost more, maybe much more.

There are at least two daily trains a day to Ljubljana, maybe three. (I am seeing conflicting info on different websites; the Slovenia rail website shows different trains than the Croatia rail website...which is different from what I see on the German rail website!). Last October I took the 12:50p train shown now on the Slovenian train website, but I don't see that train on other sites. There a train early in the morning and probably one in the evening too. The morning and evening trains may go on to Kranj. (I don't know if your ticket to Ljubljana includes the fare to Kranj, but if not, you can buy that one on board the train after you pass Ljubljana.)

As I recall, the train station in Kranj is not that central to town. You may be better off getting off the train at Ljubljana and taking the bus to Kranj; in Ljubljana, the bus station is adjacent to the train station. In Kranj I don't think they are. I have been to Kranj briefly but had a car. Kranj is not very far from Ljubljana. There are local trains that go from Ljubljana to Kranj too in case the train you take from Zagreb does not stop there.

You don't need reservations for these trains to Ljubljana, either. Note that the train I took in October was very late, more than hour late as I recall.

Can you tell me the website to look at to find the train times? I have been looking and found 1 only for that day that left at 7:38 PM and arrived in Kranj at 10:28. One site said there were no trains on Oct. 2. Not sure where to look. Please help.

Mary, this is the website I have found reliable in the past - the Slovenian rail website:

https://potniski.sz.si/en/zagreb/

Keep in mind that due to construction, some trains may be delayed or not running in certain periods. This site does have a note about buses replacing trains until August 4 but no mention of construction after that:

https://potniski.sz.si/en/zagreb/

It shows three trains to Ljubljana - at 7:05, 12:50, and 19:38. (The 12:50 if running does not stop at Kranj.)

Your best bet it to confirm the schedule at the train station (when you go to buy your tickets) once you get to Zagreb.

If it turns out there are no trains running due to construction or something? Then take a bus instead. FlixBus seems to have at least a dozen buses a day between cities. I have not used the bus station in Zagreb - but it's not far from the train station. There are several direct buses a day between Zagreb and Ljubljana, and some people seem to prefer them even when they could take the train. (I prefer trains and avoid buses except as a last resort, but some people don't really care either way.)

A third option would be to book a GoOpti shuttle (a van basically) to Slovenia. It would certainly cost more than either a bus or a train, but at least you'd know there is some other option to get there. I used GoOpti last fall to get from Ljubljana to Venice airport and it worked fine. It's a Slovenian company that provides transport to various places on demand.
