Car rental Split Croatia to Venice Italy

We are a group of 5 traveling from Split to Venice with a stop in Slovenia. The itinerary is set. I am having trouble finding an available rental car for this route. Has anyone done this route in the last few years and with what company? Any recommendations for car rental companies would be appreciated, thanks!

I’d start with Europcar, but maybe Hertz or another company will provide an acceptable rental. Sixt is another company worth checking, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the cost was higher than some others. There are also consolidator companies that could work, like AutoEurope and Discover Cars.

Our itinerary, not quite like yours, and many years ago, included Venice, Slovenia, and Croatia, including Split. But we rented in Venice upon landing, drove to Slovenia and Croatia, then returned the car at Venice, before spending a few days there. We didn’t have to deal with the potentially expensive cost of renting in one country and turning in the car in a different country. A few years earlier than that trip, we rented in Portugal and returned in Spain, and split the high return cost among three of us.

Cross border car rentals are expensive. You have to pay to get the car repatriated to the place you picked it up, and that costs money.
What I would do is go to Istria after Slovenia, and drop the car there. That way you are dropping of the car in the same country. Istria is definetely worth a visit. Then from Istria you can take a ferry across to Venice. You don't want a car in Venice anyway.
