I booked a car directly from SIXT, pickup downtown Split and drop off downtown Zagreb. They charge for an additional driver but when I check 3rd party sites like Expedia they don't mention a fee. Has anyone booked 3rd party and did the fee apply? Also, i normally disregard all the insurance add on's but whats your take on these additional protections? Worth it, or just tacked on fees?
Why would you take on the burden of an intermediate party if you can deal direct with
the company in question? Since you will eventually end up at the Sixt office to rent the
vehicle, if you don't specify an additional driver and something goes wrong, you'll have
a problem. It's an invitation for Expedia and Sixt to point fingers at each other.
You can always try a dummy rental through Expedia and see what the total comes out to
be, compared to the Sixt site. The additional driver spec may be buried somewhere in
the form, for instance.
As for insurance, what kind of driver are you, where will you be driving, and what credit
card would you be charging the rental to? Those are all risk factors that play a role in
whether to rely on your own + any credit card insurance. But in general, the additional
fees are a small amount compared to the cost of the rental and your trip, so you decide
whether the peace of mind is worth it or not. No doubt they seem high on first glance,
but it would be trivial if something bad happened.
No matter what, be sure to take pictures of the car before you drive it off the lot, and
obtain a toll vignette if you end up going into Slovenia.
