Canadians travelling to Croatia from Budapest July 2 for a week this summer, Split area, interested in spending a few days sailing and a few days along the coast. there will be 6 adults. looking for suggestions: accomodation on land or water and travel tips. from there some go back to Budapest and others travelling on to Italy.

Have you figured out how you will get to and from Split? That can chew up a significant percentage of your week.

I'm not sure that sailing will be possible in your timescale, as most of the boat trips are for 7 days duration, particularly in high season.
Have 3 nights in Split and cover Trogir from here.
Take the car ferry to Brac or Hvar for 4 nights. Check out timetables at Jadrolinija.hr. No need to book in advance. Hvar - Stay in Jelsa or an inland village such as Dol. Parking in Hvar town is difficult and it will be party central at that time, so just visit for a day trip.
