Bookending our 6 Day Dalmation Coast Tour

We are doing a 6 day bike tour starting in Split and ending in Dubrovnik, with a focus on the islands. We plan on arriving Split a couple of days early and staying in Dubrovnik for 3 days at the end. We have heard it is worthwhile heading to Bosnia and Montenegro, but love some of the interactions on this forum, so thought I would ask for your opinions. We are open to renting a car!

thanks!

I strongly recommend a visit to Mostar. You can rent a car to do that, but depending on how many of you there are, it might be economical and much less stressful to hire a private guide. Same with Kotor. The Bay of Kotor is more about scenic beauty; Mostar is about the history and the culture and the people (as well as being a lovely city).

If you do hire a private guide, do your research in advance and be specific about what you want to see and where you want to stop en route. Otherwise, you might get a somewhat "canned" tour that is not customized to your interests.

If you rent a car, you can go wherever you want, obviously, but you will have to deal with parking and traffic.

I wouldn't recommend a group tour because I don't like that sort of thing, but if that works for you, it's the cheapest option.

If you'd like some specifics, feel free to send me a private message and I'll be happy to share more details.

We drove from Trogir to Mostar, from there to Kotor Bay, then to Dubrovnik. Agree that both are worthwhile experiences. We really enjoyed the culture of Mostar. If you drive, a stop as Pocitelj for an hour or so would also be worthwhile. In Kotor Bay we stayed in Dobrota, about 5 km from the town of Kotor. The walled city is interesting and the bay is beautiful. Hopefully you will be able to fit these into your itinerary.

Thanks so much Carol and Lane! Great feedback. There are only two of us and the car sounds more attractive, as we can stop and see whatever/whenever. But, do have to say leaving it all to a guide isn't a bad deal either. We are excited about the trip, so any other suggestions in/around Split or Dubrovnik are welcomed.

You are staying in Split a couple of days and Dubrovnik for 3 days. Are you interested in doing any day trips from Split? Krka National Park is worthwhile for the waterfalls and natural beauty. Or you could visit Mostar, Pocitelj, and Blagaj Tekke from Split in a day trip. Or do you plan to visit both Mostar and Kotor from Dubrovnik? It's hard for us to give advice as we're slow travelers and spent 3 each in Mostar and Dobrota(Kotor), then 4 nights in Dubrovnik and 2 in Cavtat. Kotor Bay is an easy day trip from Dubrovnik or you could spend the night. There's really so much to see in that area that it's hard to advise what to see and what to cut. Pick an itinerary and put it into googlemaps to get an idea of the driving times. Then decide what to add or cut and how to structure your trip. Depending on what you plan to do in Split, you might find it worthwhile to rent a car for 1 day there and then 1 or 2 days in Dubrovnik. Have fun planning - whatever you choose you can't go wrong!
