Boat excursions from Split, Croatia

I will be spending 3 nights in Split in September and would like to visit some of the nearby Islands (Hvar, Brac. Vis. etc). Would I be better to join a tour and see 5 Islands in one day or spend more time on on or two Islands and get myself there by ferry or catamaran. I have been reading about how short the Blue Cave visit is. Is it really worthwhile to even go there? Which tour company is best if I go that route?

Since no one else is responding, let me throw out a few thoughts. Seeing multiple islands in one day will require some careful planning. You would need to research the Jadrolinija ferry and Jadrolinija/Krilo catamaran schedules and then plan around them. It might also require some creativity, for example, arriving in Hvar town by catamaran and then transferring by bus to Stari Grad to catch a ferry to your next island. If you want to see several islands in a day and have found a reasonably priced tour that would allow you to do that, it could be a good option for you. I've never been to the Blue Cave, so I can't comment on that part of your question.

I don't think you can see 5 islands in one day, nor would it be desirable (they take some time getting to). It's very easy to take the ferry to any island from Split. Most people stay at least a few days to explore (on my trip I went to Brac for 3 days and took the island bus to various places around the island - scooters were available as well). If you're only in Split for three days, I would pick one island and just do a day trip there based on the ferry schedule - there's no need for a tour, they're very easy to tour independently. I would leave a full day and half (or two full days) for Split and Trogir (very close to Split).
