Best Place to Island hop from - Split or Dubrovnik

Hello, we're 2 mid 60's Canadians travelling with a car through Croatia in mid May. Its at the end of our longer trip so only have about 6 nights in Croatia. We're planning to travel through Zagreb, Plitvice Park, Zadar, Trogir, Split and Dubrovnik and leave by ferry to Bari.

Thinking of spending a couple of nights in Dubrovnik; where would you suggest the other nights be given we might only pass through (and stop and briefly see) some of the others?

Would like to see a couple of islands on a day trip - which location is best to do that from?

Ok here is my two cents.
spend one day in Zagreb and leave for plitvice early morning, see plitvice and spend the nigth in Zadar.
From Zadar head to Split and see Trogir on the way.
Spend one full day in Split. From Split you can visit several Islands like Hvar, Brac or Vis. If so spend one more night in Split.
Drive from Split to Dubrovnik and spend two nights here. From Dubrovnik you have the option of visitng Mljet or Korcula among other Islands.
