We are signed on for the Best of Adriatic tour in Sept, but are feeling intimidated by all the caveats about the strenuousness of the trip. "2-8 miles of walking per day, hills, stairs, carrying luggage up five flights of stairs", etc. We are 75, quite fit and big walkers, but don't want to be exhausted or injured from something that is best suited for age 40! Is there anyone out there who has taken this particular RS trip and can give us a realistic view from personal experience? Many thanks!
When we took this tour a number of years ago there was a delightful couple in their 80's along. He was in much better shape so she opted out of some activities. As I recall the hotel in Motuvan was quite a climb uphill and the guide arranged a ride for them. Many of the activities, such as walking the wall in Dubrovnik, are on your own, so you can pace yourselves. Stay fit, keep walking, you will enjoy this tour!
If you are fit and big walkers you will be fine. We went on the tour in 2013. The most strenuous day was when we visited Plitvice National Park. A member had a fitness tracker and registered 16,000 steps that day. There are many uneven wooden stairs to navigate around the waterfalls and waterways. I don't recall a problem with moving our suitcases up stairs. There were members on the tour that were 80 and they had no problem keeping up. The walk on the wall around Dubrovnik is on your own and at your own pace. It was a wonderful tour.
Many thanks to the two who replied to our query! It is encouraging to hear that there were 80 yr olds who fared well. We were just intimidated by the mention of days that might involve 8 mile walks! Was there anyone who opted out of an activity? Hope there are more people out there who have taken this tour and can add more information. Though we have traveled a lot, we have never taken an organized tour! All advice welcome!
Tabbies, I took this tour this past September. It did not seem particularly tiring or difficult to me, and I do not remember anyone else commenting about that. I am a few years younger than you are. On various RS Tours, I find I generally walk more during my "free time" than during group activities, of course how you spend your free time is up to you: relaxing in your room or at a cafe, all the way up to hiking up a mountain. By the way, the "recommended" 10,000 steps a day is about 5 to 6 miles, depending on the length of your step. Many people have commented that the time "standing" (as in museums) is more tiring than the walking.
