Best of Adriatic Tour

First RS tour! Trying to fly in/out of same airport if cheaper. Anyone who's done this, fly into and out of Ljubljana or Dubrovnik (or does Zagreb make sense?) Any thoughts on which airport is better and why? How long a train ride from one city to the other? Thanks!!!

Hi Christine, you will have a wonderful time on that tour! Look at the option of a multi-city flight instead of a round trip flight. It’s not two 1-way tickets; it’s all on the same reservation. It will save you a lot of time and probably some money because of adding an additional day to make it work as a round trip ticket.

I flew into Ljubljana and flew home from Dubrovnik. You might want to also look at the option (if you have extra time) of flying round trip to Paris, for instance, and then flying EasyJet the next day to Ljubljana and Easy Jet from Dubrovnik back to Paris. But, that option needs extra days, so if one flight is delayed the dominoes don’t all fall down.

Buying a multi-city ticket might cost a little more, but you’re saving a lot of time and effort if you avoid backtracking. It’s usually worth the investment. Finding cheap airfare here will be difficult, you’re always looking at least one connection.

Of the three airports, Ljubljana is generally the most expensive and Zagreb is a solid and reasonably priced option. It’s like a 2hr bus ride to Ljubljana with regular service. (There’s also a train, but the bus is way more comfortable and timely.) Zagreb is great, and you could conceivably check your bags at the bus station, spend a few hours in town and then head to Ljubljana late in the afternoon. Better yet, spend a couple nights there first (though this ain’t saving you any money.)

My personal experience has been that booking direct through the airline was the best option. I’ve found that the big consolidation websites like Travelocity/Expedia had a very limited selection of flights all with extremely crummy layovers or connections. Booking direct through the airline I got to pick good flights with good connections to the exact cities I needed. IMO it’s the way to go.
