Taking a bus from Zagreb to Split on a Sunday in late September. Is there a recommended company?
Do I need to book ahead of time? Will be spending the previous night in Zagreb.
If I had to take the bus, I'd probably take FlixBus. Their pricing is based on remaining availability on each bus; the closer the bus gets to selling out, the higher the price. So I would probably lock myself a specific one and buy it as soon as I had my plans nailed down.
I'm not a big fan of long bus rides, so personally I'd take the train - a little longer (about six hours), a little more expensive (about 30 euros) but probably more comfortable. I hate being stuck in a little bus seat for 5+ hours, and I enjoy train rides. Personal preference.
Thank you.
We've taken Flixbus a number of times, and it's always been pleasant. Not as pleasant as a train, but overall fine.
We have been traveling thru Hungary, Slovenia and Ctoatia using Car rentals and Flixbus depending on our plans. We really love train travel but in these countries there are more opportunities for bus travel. We have done Dubrovnik to Zagreb, Zargreb to Ljubljana, Ljubljana to Rovinj, and will to Zadar to Split and Split to Dubrovnik. Will take a round trip on Getbybus to Kotor and back to Dubrovnik.
Ticket prices are very reasonable and the ride is fine. One part that is easier is having luggage stored under the bus and not give to drag it up and down the narrow train steps. Flixbus has airconditioning and free wifi and have been clean. Happy travels and hope this helps.
As of 2015 it was typical to be charged a modest fee (equivalent to about US $1 at that time) for each piece of luggage stored in the hold of the bus. If a bus-company employee stretches out his or her hand, it is not a scam.
