Austria and Croatia Itinerary - looking for tips and reccomendations

Hi all -

We refined our itinerary. If anyone has tips on what to see, restaurants, etc., that would be super helpful.

Family of 5 - 2 adults, 19yr old son, 16 yr old son, and 13 yr old daughter. Kids have been to Europe before and love history, museums, and down time. I have all the hotels booked and plane tickets to and from the US, and in between. Trying to determine best transportation between cities. Did you get city passes, transit passes, etc.? Any tours we must do?

Thank you!!!

So no changes to your itinerary?

Vienna to Graz - OeBB train. Buy tickets from the OwBB website.

Graz to Zagreb - Flixbus. Just took that bus today. Use the bathroom before you board.

For Vienna, when is your trip? If during the summer holidays, then under 15 is free. The Vienna city pass is a rip off. Just buy a 72 hour transportation pass and pay for the attractions as you go. If in summer, I can make some family recommendations.

We originally were not thinking we would visit Austria, but our flight options were limited and we decided to be flexible.

We will be in Vienna at the end of June. Flixbus was the carrier we were planning to use. Good to know about the bathroom!!! That is a big concern of mine. Booking the tickets now.

We would love some family recommendations! My 19 yr old wants to take the train (with all of us) to Bratislava for a day trip for a communism tour. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

At Schonbrunn they have a quick Struddle class. You Watch how the baker makes it then you eat it. It was fun. Got us out of the sun on off our feet for a little while.
Also in Vienna they had an evening roof walking tour on St Stephan’s Cathedral. I had it booked but had some stomach issues that evening and had to cancel. Check their website.

There is kyaking in Dubrovnik and hiking on Lokrum Island. A quick but expensive ferry ride from the pier.

In Vienna if you like museums and history I recommend the Military History Museum, not far from the Hauptbahnhof. Also of course the Kunst art museum, one of the best in the world. Slovenia is great but not sure about the value of a day trip there from Zagreb. A day trip to where in Slovenia? Ljubljana? That's at least two hours each way, and is a nice city, but is better to stay a night or two than do a rushed day trip in my opinion.

These are great suggestions. Thank you! For the day trip to Slovenia, we were going to book a private tour, however, if it's a 4-5 hr round trip, we might pass. Are 3 full days in Zagreb too much then? Any place you might stop in between Zagreb and Plitvice?

Thanks!

I liked Zagreb but 3 full days just in the city is a lot. I was there with a tour and we were there 3 nights which was fine, meaning two full days. We did one good day trip for at least half a day to the northeast, visiting a village called Kumrovec which has Tito’s birthplace restored as a memorial to him, surrounded by old village buildings and exhibits on rural life. In another village nearby there is a small museum dedicated to a Croatian sculptor named Augustincic. This area is right next to the Slovenian border although we didn’t cross it (we did Slovenia for 3 days later on). I wouldn’t say these are “must sees” but it was a nice excursion from Zagreb. You would need a car or a tour of some sort for this. I don’t know of much between Zagreb and Plitvice. We bused straight there. I remember some pretty scenery as we got near the park and passing through an industrial city that didn’t look very appealing. We had a rest stop at a roadside restaurant famous for its grilled lamb which was roasting on spits, but we didn’t eat there as it wasn’t meal time.

Thank you. I think we will leave Graz later than planned in the day. That should give us 2 full days in Zagreb.
