advice on trip to Croatia

Hi,

Planning a September trip for New York to Croatia. This is our plans:

day 1 - New York to Frankfut (using points so this works)
Day 2- Morning flight to Split Rent Car (get to our Airbnb about 1 PM)
Day 3 Spilt
Day 4 - Drive to ferry to Korcula
Day 5 Korcula
Day 6 Korcula
Day 7 Drive Korucal to Drabunik
Day 8 Drabunik
Day 9 afternoon flight to Frankfurt (drop off car)
Day 10 Frankfut to NY

1- Is 2 1/2 hours enough time between flights in Frankfut both ways?
2-- Is parking a big problem in Spilt?
3- Is there parking in or just outside Drabunik.? ( we are staying at an airbnb 20 minute outside Drabrunik do we jus take a car or uber there?

Would love to go to more places but hate to move around to much. Don't have the patience for the border crossing or driving in Montenegro.

thanks in advance.

Either your autocorrect is malfunctioning badly, or, I am not sure how much I should
comment on a plan in which every location is misspelled at least once.

If you don't provide a bit more detail on the locations you're staying at, it will be hard
to assist with any information about parking. Obviously parking in the central parts
of any city is difficult. Have you reached out to the places you are staying at for more
information about parking?

There are plenty of threads about connections, especially in Frankfurt. 90 minutes is
generally enough but since you have provided no information on your ticketing, it's
hard to comment further.

I will say, that, contrary to lots of other proposed itineraries, yours is prudent and has
a good chance of working since you're not trying to go to too many places in a short
period of time.

Hi Tom, I assume you're Phyllis' husband as you both are from Farmingville N.Y. and it would be too uncanny for two people from Farmingville to post questions on the same day about Croatia!
Phyllis wrote up an tinerary with Dubrovnik, Korcula, Split and Brac in it-- along with Montenegro. A car rental makes more sense for that itinerary.

If you're only planning to go to Split, Korcula and Dubrovnik-- you can much more easily travel on the Krilo Catamaran. The catamaran is faster than the ferry and travels to Korcula Town in about 2.5 to 3 hours. Korcula Town to Dubrovnik takes another two hours. There also are larger ferries that take more time.

Parking is problematic in both Split and Dubrovnik with parking places few and far between and the odds of scraping the bumpers or sides of a car quite high when parked next to a brick wall on a street. — a very common practice. Cars tend to get packed into very small spaces on the street and that increases the odds of scrapes and dents. You also don't need a car at all while in Split or Dubrovnik. And on Korcula you only need one if you're leaving Korcula Town for other parts of the island. ( I was there two days and never left the old town until taking the catamaran and ferries). if you want to go to other parts of the island, there are always taxis and buses for that.

Uber is available in Split and Dubrovnik.

So, make your trip to Croatia real relaxing and leave the driving to the Captain of the boat!

www.CroatiaFerries.com has ferry/catamaran schedules and fares and you can also book tickets on that website.

I do understand driving in Europe can be difficult especially parking. But we have always done it in numerous trips in the past and it gave us flexibility. In Dubronik we are staying not too far from the city. we can park at the place we are staying and uber to town? In Split can you park just out city and walk it or take a cab to where you want to go in city? Ubers in Croatia?

To answer your first question, do you have one flight booking with a change at Frankfurt or two separate bookings? If it's two separate bookings it's hard to say how much time you need as your first flight could always be delayed. Frankfurt is a very big airport and does take quite a bit of time getting in and out.

Regarding your itinerary, based on what you have above I would not hire a car at all as you won't need one. I did a similar trip myself and we did not need a car. To get from Split airport into town you can get a taxi, and once you're in Split you don't need a car at all. The best way from Split to Korcula is the Krilo Star (as mentioned above) which then goes onwards to Dubrovnik (I believe Jadrolijna also does this route). You definitely don't need a car in Korcula or Dubrovnik. To get into town from where you are staying you can get a taxi or, depending on where it is, get the bus (we stayed outside Dubrovnik and were able to get a bus in each day). To get from Dubrovnik to the airport there is a bus or you can get a taxi. Good luck with the rest of your planning.

We visit Croatia yearly to visit family. We start with a car in Zagreb, move on to Rijeka, then drive to Zadar where we park at a cousin’s house. After Zadar we drive to Split and ditch the car. Seriously, it is more of a hindrance than a help. We then ferry from Split to Korčula then ferry to Dubrovnik. Yes, my husband’s family is very spread out, mom’s side in the north, dad’s side in the south.
If we are flying home from Dubrovnik we take a cab to the airport. If we are returning to Rijeka (our home base) we rent another car.
In fact, none of his relatives in Zadar, Korčula, or Dubrovnik even own a car. They say they have never needed one. Save yourself some money by not renting and use it for cabs.

If you like to drive, no arguing. Your schedule doesn't allow much time to use the car for more than Point A to Point B driving. My trip a few weeks ago to the region. My driver would stop anyplace i wanted to stop. I spent the time looking out the window. I doubt I paid much more than the cost of renting and it was a heck of a lot more convenient. .

You haven't got time for Montenegro, but that being said, I would be surprised if the border took 30 minutes.

Looks like a good trip. Enjoy.

2 - Parking is a problem in Split especially in summer seasons. The best is to use a bike or uber
3 - Dubrovnik is much crowdier then Split so the best option is go thru the city by walking or use some uber service for longer distances

If you have time I would recomend to visit the nature in Croatia which is amazing and with less people in summer times.
You have trails like this:

Yes parking and driving in Split are difficult! You don't need a car for this trip. Use Uber or taxis or make sure your accommodations are close to sites you want to visit. You might enjoy the Korcula boat taxi that takes you to 3 places---it's a fun, relaxing day.
