Adriatic Pre/Post Tour in Zagreb and Sarajevo

My wife and I are signed up for a mid-October '26 RS Adriatic tour (beginning in Ljubljana and ending in Dubrovnik). We have begun planning time spent pre/post tour. Initial thoughts include flying into Zagreb, spending 3-4 days there ahead of the tour, and post-tour spending 3-4 days in Sarajevo, before returning to Zagreb for return flight to U.S. (We hope to rely on train/bus travel for all city connections.)

Questions: Is flying in and out of Zagreb from U.S. a good option? If not, other suggestions? Any experience traveling by train or bus from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo? Sarajevo to Zagreb?

Thank you!

Why wouldn't you fly home from Sarajevo? There's no reason to go back to Zagreb. You buy what's called an open-jaw ticket, or on many airline websites it's called multi-city.

Only you can answer that after you research it. I like GoogleFliggts for that. My guess is you will do well with an open jaw ticket. Also look at departures out of Podgorica (TGD).

Dubrovnik to Sarajevo is a bus or a private transfer for maybe $250. No trains and I dont believe any direct flights.

There is no train from Dubrovnik.
Doubt transfer would be less then 300 euros

Bus might be a solution.

You are correct, I forgot the Croatia factor $$$$$

Daytrip.com illustrates it well as they want about 227 euro Sarajevo to Dubrovnik, but price it a 357 euro in the other direction. But I know a guy that knows a guy that I suspect will be closer to $300. Or shop the transfer with a Bosnian tour company.

First off, good on you and good plan. Zagreb and Sarajevo are both great, overlooked cities. You’ll enjoy spending time there. FWIW, I think the time spent in Ljubljana on the tour itinerary is depressingly short. If you thinking three nights up here, I’d lean towards two in Zagreb and an extra in Ljubljana (though three nights in Zagreb would go down very easy imo.)

Zagreb seems to be the airport hub of the region, perhaps by default, but generally the best connections and price end up there. Bus connections to Ljubljana are frequent and easy, the train was rough.

From Dubrovnik to Sarajevo, if there’s no quick flights, I would look into a private transfer with a tour company. This would include some interesting stops along the way, and give you a good look at BiH. FunkyTours has a good reputation here, and I was very pleased with them overall (though not this itinerary.) A straight, long bus ride would work here too.

From Sarajevo, the easy answer is it’s your departure city on an open jaw ticket. Every flight from the US will include a layover/change of planes in Western Europe somewhere, and it’s worth seeing what the cost/convenience equates to. Croatia Airlines runs turboprop flights to Zagreb that take under an hour and are cheap, though I’m not sure of availability in October. Worst case is a long bus ride, or longer private transfer with stops along the way. (I was trying to arrange this myself last summer with FunkyTours. The stops looked very interesting and beautiful, but I couldn’t justify it solo. It’s worth considering.)

In September I hired a transfer from my fishing grounds in Bosnia & Herzegovina (BIH) to the Kravica Waterfalls not terribly far from Dubrovnik, to Mostar for a night, to the Blagaj tekija Derivish Monastery and to Sarajevo. Fourth trip through BIH. You can take a train from Mostar to Sarajevo too if you want. That will save you a lot on the transfer cost. I bet it gets you to $250. Any time you get out of Croatia you save money.

I can give you the name of the agency that set it up. They have taken care of me on all my trips in the Balkans which I think is up to 7 in total.
