9 day trip in Croatia - asking for advice and renting a car vs. private driver

I'm going on a mother/daughter trip to Croatia in June, landing in Split and leaving out of Dubrovnik. We will travel north out of Split and then make our way down to Dubrovnik. I'm trying to decide if we should make the trip to Plitvice or stay a little closer and go to only Krka? I don't want to spend too much time driving, and I don't want to feel rushed where we stay so if you have recommendations on cutting things out or doing this a different way, please let me know. Thank you!

Day 1: Arrive in Afternoon, tour Split and spend the night

Day 2: Leave early (ultimate destination Plitvice Lakes
- Stop in Trogir, visit St. Lawrence Cathedral
-stop in Sibenik, visit Cathedral of St. Jmes and walk the waterfront for lunch
-drive through Dalmation Hinterland at Gornja Ploca
-head to our hotel/inn near or in Plitvice (suggestions?)

Day 3: Tour/hike Plitvice
- pick up luggage at hotel and travel to Rastoke or Skradin for the night

Day 4: Morning Head to Krka
- Afternoon stop in Sibenik
- Return car, spend night in Split or take ferry to Hvar?

Day 5/6: Hvar

Day 7/8: Korkula? Mljet?

Day 9-10: Dubrovnik (do we make a trip to Montenegro?)

Day 11: depart via Dubrovnik

I think the bust first few days would be balanced nicely with just one island stop instead of two. I would also omit the Montenegro day trip since you have only one full day in Dubrovnik.

Personally, I’d recommend doing Krka only, it’s beautiful and much easier to fit into your itinerary without the long detour. Plitvice is stunning, but it takes a lot of time and is quite out of the way, especially since you're heading south toward Dubrovnik.

A great option would be to do a day trip to Krka from Split, with stops in Trogir and Šibenik. That way you will save a lot of time and surprisingly not feel rushed. I highly recommend Ivan Ćosić from MC-Travel Croatia (you can find him on Facebook). He’s a pro, super accommodating, and really good at matching your pace. You'll save a lot of time in this beautiful country this way!

You could drive from Split to stay near Plitvice and plan to tour there early the next day. We stayed in Slunj, about 30 minutes north of Plitvice so that we could spend the afternoon walking along the river in Rastoke. We went to Plitvice early the next morning and were happy to beat the crowds. You could leave there by 1:00 and drive to Skradin for a night or two. Spend the next day at Krka National Park. You could use Skradin as a base to visit Sibenik and the nearby Sokolorski Raptor Center or just sit at the river beach and watch the swans. We didn't enjoy Trogir but found Primosten charming for a short visit. We spent time in Mostar and Kotor and enjoyed Mostar more.
