8 Day Itinerary from Zagreb to Dubrovnik

We are traveling in September. This will be our first trip to Croatia. Should we give up a day and a half in Zagreb to stay one night near Piltvice Natl Park and then also be able to add a day in Dubrovnik? We would then only be in Zagreb an evening, a full day, and maybe until noon the next day to head to Piltvice. We either spend another night in Zagreb or lose a day in Dubrovnik. With more research, we have decided to add a night near Piltvice. Also, does anyone have any advice regarding rental car companies?

Thank you.

Some people really like Zagreb, but I think most people don't find it their favorite stop in Croatia. I don't know what your itinerary is for the rest of the trip - Zagreb, Plitvice, Dubrovnik, what in between? What are your interests?

My plan now is one or two nights in Zagreb. On to Piltvice Natl Park for one night. Three nights in Split and two or three days in Dubrovnik. We are interested in doing a Blue Cave tour and Krka Natl Park. Our main interest is nature.

I just got home from Zagreb yesterday (3 nights). Yes, give up your days in Zagreb! It is just a normal working capital city, lacking the spectacular scenery of the rest of the country. The traffic was so bad on Friday afternoon because everyone was trying to get out of there to the coast. It has its charms which can be hard to find and I say this as someone who has been to Croatia over 10 times.

I like Zagreb, it sort of speaks to my relaxed tourism; especially Upper Town. But you said you were going for nature, so I guess I would suggest spending one night, then the better part of the next day before heading on to your humdrum accommodation at Plitvice. Do Plitvice early the next day before the crush hits and then move on again; I guess Krka Park. Sorry guys, Plitvice in all its glory didn’t light my fire.

You said for nature, but then you have 3 nights in Split. Maybe someone can recommend a more palatable village not far from Split and the Blue cave and then you do both as day trips? I guess some of it had to do with the season and the day of the week. Part of what turns me off in Split is that it has become a drunk European Trust Fund Brat hang out. But that is Seasonal and Weekends.

If you want nature, move quickly down the coast and do some time in Montenegro. No place more beautiful, fewer tourists and less expensive.

This is the sort of trip I would get some planning advice on. With your interests, with a little inside knowledge of memorable locations to stay in the country and good transportation options it could be a pretty special trip in the most beautiful parts of the country with day excursions into the tourist traps. This is the lady I have used a few times in Croatia and think she did an excellent job on the last 4 trips she planned Dijana Krkotic, Doclea Travel

Thank you for your tips. I will look at Doclea Travel as well and now consider Montenegro.
