My husband and I will be on a tour In October with a home base of 3 nights in Opatija. We plan to leave the tour for part of a day to visit my husband's ancestoral home in the hill towns of Istria (very small town). We will need to rent a car for 1 day while in Opatija, pick up and return the same place. Can anyone recommend a good car rental place in Opatija? Thank you!

Pick up and drop off plus transfer to and from where ever you are staying i would budget at not less than 2 5 hours. I would hire a driver for the day. I might have a lead on one.

Sixt is a global, German rental agency. We exclusively use Sixt and have done so dozens of times. They have an office in Opatija.

Thank you for your replies. It appears the Sixt car rental in Opatija has closed. We would need to take a bus or Uber to Rijeka. Would this be feasible or shall I look for another company in Opatija? My husband really enjoys driving and exploring on his own so although hiring a guide is tempting, I know he will want to do this on his own. It's kind of like his pilgramage to his grandparent's homeland.

It’s a quick bus ride to Rijeka (25 minutes), so no problem getting over there if you feel better with a larger company. I suppose you could do more digging into the local companies for reviews, maybe try TripAdvisor.
Please share the village, some may have ideas to add to your excursion.

Nova appears to have an office in Opatija. We rented for a month from Dubrovnik to Zagreb and it was great.

Thank you for the car rental info for Opatija. The villages my husband wants to see our Lupaglav, Goren Ja Vas, and Vizinada. We plan on doing a loop and hopefully will have time to see Motovon, Hum, or Groznjan. I think we are up for a relaxed day just taking in the feel of Istria hill towns with no set schedule other than seeing those towns I listed. We are getting very excited!

That should be quite a scenic drive with Ucka park right there. The drive along the coast toward Rabac is lovely.

We have an apt in Rijeka and use CarWiz or Hertz when there. And yes, Opatija is a short bus ride or an inexpensive taxi ride to downtown Rijeka where you would pick up the car.
I would recommend visiting Grožnjan over the others you mention, it’s a larger town and has better restaurants. In fact, when we went to Hum we were 5 people and the restaurant couldn’t accommodate us and there wasn’t another open that day. It was late September. Motovun is horrible for parking, you can’t drive up, have to park down below and either bus or walk it up. Driving up and parking is easy in Grožnjan.
