Taking the Metro to/from Sofia Airport

I’m booked on an RS Bulgaria tour later this year. The instructions from the RS office on how to get to/from the airport advise either a taxi or a bus that stops a few blocks away from the tour hotel. I was on SOF’s website earlier today, and it looks like it’s possible to take the Metro (subway) between the airport and the city center.

Has anyone done this, and how did it work out for you? If you did not take the Metro, I’d love to hear how whichever transportation method you did use worked out.

We took the RS Bulgaria tour last month. We decided to take a taxi from the airport to the tour hotel where we had made reservations to stay there prior to the tour beginning. We followed the instructions for taking the taxi given in the RS materials. Got off the plane, claimed baggage, got local currency at an ATM, went to the specified taxi counter, got a taxi cab number, walked out the door and there was the taxi waiting. It cost us about 17 local currency for the trip (@ 1.73 local to the US $) and I rounded up the fare to 20 local as he handled our luggage. Used the same taxi service when leaving the hotel two weeks later. Would use that method again.

Thanks, Charlie.

Do tell us about the tour. I'm anxious to hear ... well, anything!

Teresa - RS Tour office strongly suggested OK Super Trans, and, we used them both from to the airport ... reservations are not needed but simply walk over to their desk in the arrivals hall after you claim your baggage; their staff (english speaking) will ask you your destination and give you a paper with the cab ID for your ride (right outside the door).
Cheers.

I wonder if the office isn't really even aware of the Metro. The airport extension just opened this past April, and it only costs one lev for the ride. I think I'll risk it: I really dislike taxis!

I was in Bulgariya 2 times and first one our tour included a trasfer from airport-hotel-airport. It was very convenient! But the second time our tour operator was not that great and transfer was not included! So we had to take a taxi 2 times, we used http://kiwitaxi.com. It was cheap and fast. My family was happy with holiday!

I would go ahead to try the Metro. It looks like a straight shot on the red line to SU Sv. Kliment Ohridski station.

Thanks, everyone. The RS office revised their instructions to make taking the Metro the #1 choice, so that's definitely what I'll be doing.

Just popping back to say that I took the Metro from SOF into town yesterday, and it's super-easy. Follow the blue arrows on the floor at SOF after you go through Customs. They'll take you outdoors, and you should look to your left where you'll see another building with a big "M" over the doorway. Once you enter, there's a machine at the bottom of the ramp on the left where you can buy a Metro ticket (I used a two lev note, and it gave me change). There's also a counter where you can buy a bottle of water or a small snack if you're absolutely dying.

Put your ticket into the turnstile and be sure to take it back before going through to the platform. There was a train sitting there when I went through, and it was clean and roomy. It took 15-20 minutes to get to the Sofia University (Kliment Ohridski) stop, where it was an easy walk to the Crystal Palace Hotel. (The underpasses can be a bit confusing, but just be patient and turn around and try again if you end up across the street from where you want to be.)
