Stay over in Sofia and environs

I am meeting friends in Thessaloniki on the afternoon of 20 May. I have been to Thessaloniki on two occasions for several days and have never been in Sofia. My Bulgaria tour ends after breakfast on 18 May. I DO LOVE Thessaloniki bit am considering extrending my time in Sofia for one--and perhaps two--days before taking the bus to Thessaloniki. What is there to see in in Sofia and environs that RS doesn't cover in the tour? Is it worth staying there or should I move on to Thessaloniki after and extra or two nights? Thanks for your advice.

I’m doing a tour this year with a different company and we spend a few days in Sofia. I found this cool museum that I want to do - and it looks like the Rick Steves’ tour does not cover it.

It’s called the Red Flat - an apartment preserved in the exact style of a home during the communist era.

It looks super interesting.

In your Tour Account, under the Pre-Tour Planning section, did you see the "Sightseeing On Your Own" section with these recommendations:

"Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Sofia that we will not be doing as a group: National Art Gallery, National Museum of Military History, Sofia City Art Gallery, National Archaeological Museum, The Red Flat."
