Romania/Bulgaria

Hi,
We have a trip planned for our family of five with a week in Romania and a week in Bulgaria. We were going to pick up a car in Brasov(as there would be less traffic than Bucharest) tour around return it in Brasov then head to Bulgaria. We would like to visit Veiliko Tarnova, Plovdiv, Rila Monastery and fly out of Sofia. My problem is renting a car. It seems difficult to find a car that we could bring from Romania to Bulgaria and otherwise it seems like the main place to rent a car is Sophia. I was hoping to take a bus or train to VT or Ruse and rent a car there and drop it off in Sophia but all the rental companies say "no vehicles available". Not sure if the best option is to fly to Sophia from Bucharest which is expensive and pick up a car there and then back track to VT and Plovdiv.

Any help would be apreciated.

Been to Bulgaria a few times. Never faced your problem because in Bulgaria, a guide or a driver with a car costs about the same as just renting a car in Austria. And with someone else driving my holiday is much more relaxed. If you need the name of a guide, let me know.

Generally it can be very expensive (and difficult sometimes) to rent a car in one country and drop it off in another. So I definitely would rethink that. Have you tried going through AutoEurope? I'm planning a trip to Romania (possibly Bulgaria as well) for September, and will probably try there first as I've had very good luck with them on prior rentals in Europe.

But regardless, I'm finding that flying between cities is sometimes the best option. Have you checked prices on Skyscanner or Google flights? I have seen some pretty reasonable flight prices within the two countries.

We currently have a car reserved at the Bucharest Airport. We'll mostly be in Romania,
then sweek in Bulgaria. We'll have to pay a fee to take it to Bulgaria (~$100). We are returning it to the airport back in Bucharest (which is in the southern part of Romania). We found several rental companies that allow this - just not the super cheap ones.

Could you share the name of the company you are using?
