Plovdiv and Verdi

RS is right, at least about Plovdiv and Bulgaria...if you only visit one city in Bulgaria make it Plovdiv. A really interesting historic, friendly city with layer upon layer of previous civilizations under your feet and sometimes viewable.

One of the joys of Plovdiv we discovered on our first day was Plovdiv’s OPERA OPEN Performances of not only Opera but other types of music and theatre too.

These are all staged in the Ancient Roman Ampitheatre in Plovdiv's Old Town an amazingly beautiful setting where the Roman Citizens, and others I presume, of Trimontium once sat and listened to music and were entertained in this same spot. This ancient theatre is large but still very intimate and the Romans knew something about how to build a good theatre....there isn’t a bad sight line in the entire place.

There is Ballet, Concerts, Opera and Even James Bond in concert, a symphonic tribute to all those great theme songs.

The last performance is July 28th for OPERA OPEN but other concerts are staged here too. Sting played two nights in June.

So if you are coming this way this year or next (this is an annual event) do look for the ticket kiosk on Plaza Stambolov near Gurko street an get tickets. Tickets are available on the same day (usually) and a day in advance is great. Cash only.

You wont forget a warm summer night in Plovdiv at the Roman Amphitheatre.

Thanks, lovely town. An odd story, we were there on July 4th a few years ago and to our surprise there was a fireworks display. I dont know why or by who, just watched it out the hotel window.
