Adding a stop in Bulgaria or Romania

I'm taking an OAT tour to Bulgaria and Romania next year. Here's the itinerary at a high level. There are a number of day trips I'm not showing, and some of the destinations are stopovers en route and not overnight stays.

Bulgaria

  • Sofia
  • Plovdiv
  • Veliko Tarnovo

Romania

  • Viscri
  • Sighisoara
  • Sibiu
  • Bucharest
  • Dolhesti
  • Vadu
  • Cluj-Napoca

I'm thinking of adding a few days at either end, and based on some of what I've read on this forum, I'm considering visiting the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria (Burgas and Nessebar) and/or Timișoara, Romania.

Any opinions about adding these destinations? Or others?

If there's interesting stuff in Burgas, I missed it, but I liked Nessebar and Sozopol.

Romania has a lot of variety. Your itinerary includes three places I haven't seen--Viscri, Dolhesti and Vadu. Does the Dolhesti stop allow you to see some of the painted monasteries in the northeast?

I liked Timisoara. It's visually attractive and historically important as the place where the revolution began. As of 2015 there as a very-low-budget museum about the events of 1989 in Timisoara. Maramures was a great place to spend a couple of days (at least). It's a traditional area where you see wooden gate posts in front of houses, women in traditional dress on their way to church on Sundays, the Merry Cemetery, and a memorial/museum to the victims of Communism located in a former prison in Sighetu Marmației.

I'd say two extra days would go farther in Bulgaria than in Romania.

Thanks acraven.

We will be visiting Moldovita Monastery, so yes!

We will also be stopping at the Merry Cemetery and Barsana Wooden Monastery. And we have a few hours free in Sighetu Marmației, so a visit to the old prison there is definitely possible.

I'll definitely do some more research before I book my flights to see how easy it would be to add these stops to the beginning or end of my itinerary. Thanks again!
